Plovdiv is one of Bulgaria’s most important transport hubs. Located in the heart of the country, the city is an excellent starting point for trips around the region as well as connections to Sofia, the Black Sea coast, and other major cities. Travel options are varied—trains and intercity buses offer convenient routes, regular timetables, and affordable prices.

Trains to and from Plovdiv

Plovdiv Railway Station is the second-largest in Bulgaria and one of the country’s key rail hubs.

  • Major routes pass through here, including the main Sofia – Burgas – Varna line, as well as connections toward Smolyan, Kardzhali, and other destinations in southern Bulgaria.
  • You can choose between fast trains (express) and regular passenger trains, depending on whether you prefer a lower price or more comfort.
  • Modern trains are equipped with air-conditioning, comfortable seats, and often Wi-Fi, especially on the busiest routes.
  • Prices are affordable—for example, the trip Plovdiv–Sofia takes about 2 hours and usually costs noticeably less than traveling by car or bus.
  • The railway station is centrally located and easy to reach on foot, by taxi, or by local public transport.

Intercity buses from Plovdiv

Plovdiv has several bus stations, each serving different directions:

  • Yug (South) Bus Station – main station for routes to Sofia, Pazardzhik, Blagoevgrad, and Western Bulgaria.
  • Sever (North) Bus Station – for routes to the Rhodope Mountains, Asenovgrad, Smolyan, and nearby villages.
  • Rodopi Bus Station – covers regional routes and smaller towns and settlements.

Advantages of travelling by bus

  • More frequent departures compared to trains.
  • Modern coaches with air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, and comfortable seating.
  • Shorter travel time to some nearby destinations without a rail connection (for example, Smolyan or Hisarya).

Bus tickets can be purchased directly at the bus-station ticket offices, from the driver, or online through various platforms.
